Super Metroid, only better. The many versions makes PB suitable for all occasions. Using this as a base (hence the name) for your hack will make for some great gameplay. I.E: Hyper metroid. Tons of shortcuts, physic changes, new pallets keep the game feeling fresh even though it is the same as vanilla layout and objective wise.

This was an excellent hack, but like every hack hack there, there's always a few cons.
PROS:
-Great Level Design
-Good Resprites
-Possibly the most exciting Escape sequence ever
-Non-linear
-HUD and Ammo System was very well done
-Even the READ_ME was impressive
-Custom Into movies
-Custom Credits, I don't know if other hacks have done this, but it is really excellent
-Good Use of Project Base. This hack blew out of the water the potential that Project base has for a hack.
-Easy IBJ for easy sequence Breaking
-Tourain Gate system was nice. Not once did I get frustrated while looking for them. Hints are placing in many spots to tell you where to look.
-Fast Paced
-Mini-Phantoon
-Most bosses were fun to battle
-Spazer + Plasma
CONS
-WS after beating phantoon before getting varia was very annoying. The WS ghosts were a hassle.
-Draygon was a joke.
-Were a couple bugs, but none really worth noting.
-A WHOLE LOT of enemies during the escape.

All in all, amazing. While WS and Draygon made me very frustrated, this is a 5 star hack. Many times I came across something and said "What was he thinking by doing this?" Only to come back later and discover why and call it genius. The mprphsound wasn't really annoying to me, but having the item jingle for major upgrades would be nice. Great job RealRed, amazing hack! It almost makes me want to give mine up because topping this is not possible. (Don't worry I 'm not giving up, I said almost.) Can't wait to see you next hack.

Yes, you can beat this hack. It is so unique. You'd think a one room hack would be horrible in general, but not this hack. Even when locked in a 1x1 area this hack has tons of replay value. The three difficulty modes keep the challenge fresh once you master one of them. You win by killing rinkas and collecting the drops the give. But beware, its not as easy as it sounds. 1000 pts to win!

Very enjoyable small hack.
The thing I enjoyed the most was subtle use of spriteset events. Very few hacks utilize this feature very much or very well. It was very nice to see.
Only complaint is that you get locked into MB's rooms when you find it so you can't turn around if you want to get more items.
Recommend.

Very great advancement on a non-linear Fusion. Some more changes are necessary for it to truly feel like a non-linear game. However, what is there is very well done. Several powerful items are available for grabs pretty early on, recommended.

This is from part of my judge review for the contest.
The hack is solid. The story is great, the concept is good, the gameplay is good. I died to the massive heat run but it was decently balanced. I feel like it was one of those “you have to die to learn what to do” kind of things, which isn’t bad, especially given that that’s the only section of the game to be like that. Also, you didn’t add respin. WHY?! Space-jump was god-tier though. There were minimal (if any) errors in level design and flowed well. Definitely give this hack a go

This is a very solid hack. Game-play was fair, simple, and well thought out. I didn't feel cheated when I died and used each death to gain understanding of what to do next. Some level design choices are off, but are simply rookie mistakes. Solid short hack. Recommend.

Probably the best fusion hack so far. Level-design is nice and the puzzles for many items were very neat challenges. (Though nearly all of them are obsolete when you get Space Jump). As always, there are things I will complain about. Let's talk about the open hatches in boss rooms. I can imagine why these were left open or why they don't lock, but it allows for players to be knocked out of a boss fight, forcing them to restart it. This happened to me on Nightmare twice, which was VERY annoying. Also, while the double varia-X is neat, I would not have included them because of the graphical bug they cause. It removes polish from an otherwise polished hack. You could have asked me to find a solution for you :P I know asm too bud! Regardless, fun hack. Only really struggled with the bosses I mentioned above in terms of difficulty.

A very pretty hack! The speedup in movement is nice (takes a bit to get used to) and level design is neat. I found it slightly disappointing when I fought some bosses only to get rewarded with the item I had just picked up before the boss. (I apparently sequence broke). All in all, it's a solid hack. I loved the "beam missile" take on charge beam.
Super Metroid: space Junk (Not Contest Ver.) by Crystal Knight [SM Exploration], rated by Cpt.Glitch on Aug 27, 2018 (Star Star Star Star Star )

Note: This review is based of the contest version. Any bugs I have seen have likely been fixed in this version, so I did not mention them and thus did not effect my rating.

This was probably the best hack from the "Post Hack Scrubs" contest. It is also the largest. Crystal_Knight never fails to deliver a solid and enjoyable hack. The hack is very open ended in nature, which unfortunately leads to a lot of backtracking. This didn't bother me personally, (it is a metroid game after all) but I can see others getting slightly annoyed by that. Difficulty was much more balanced than his past hacks. He made ammo actually useful at the cost of beams being very weak. This is sightly annoying early game though, as enemies take very many shots to kill with any beam type. Lastly, the hack is aesthetically pleasing and fits the contest theme well. Well done.
Super Metroid Brew by Cardweaver [SM Quick Play], rated by Cpt.Glitch on Aug 27, 2018 (Star Star Star Star Star )

Pros:
-Spooky
-Level art and enemy graphics were well done
-The hack is based around X-Ray aka flashlight. Surprisingly does a good job utilizing it.
-Underwater physics were actually enjoyable
-Failed to take screenshot
-Phantoon and his noises

Cons:
-Sudden ending, even if it is amusing
-Sadly, having to stop to use X-ray to find where you need to go gets stale quickly

Conclusion: It's very interesting a neat hack that somehow makes X-Ray usable. The ending was a bit abrupt, but the laughter it provides makes up for it.

A very pretty and well designed hack. It was updated during the contest to fix most of the bugs that existed. However there is still one music bug that exists when going through an area transition when custom music is playing. The hack is large, but sadly too much so. Many rooms felt empty and pointless, which made exploration boring and almost annoying, considering that most of the rooms were massive. Regardless, it is a fun hack to play. The research area was by far my favorite part of the hack.
Stargazer by Ing-ing [MZM Quick Play], rated by Cpt.Glitch on Jun 26, 2018 (Star Star Star Star Star )
100% in 0:37
Completion time is in minutes:seconds. Most hacks made within a day are borderline unplayable and feature an unchanged layout. Ing-Ing breaks this pattern with Stargazer. Ing-Ing tested his hacking ability, and ultimately proves himself as a hacker through this experiment. The hack is short (it was made in 24 hours after all), but features an entirely new layout, tilesets, music, and many ASM patches to boot. (even though you didn't credit me for mine :P ) The hack is surprisingly well suited for even novice Zero Mission players, which is rare for an Ing-Ing hack. Even still, his room design, puzzles, and enemy usage (reos and Imago are never neglected) still show that it was Ing behind all of this. If Ing-Ing made an entire hack with enjoyability of this caliber, it'll be a hit without a doubt. Now for the few cons.

The hack does have various sound effect bugs that can be easily fixed, and has one particularly weird boss fight due to room design. I only noticed a few tiling errors (only one of which I actually noted on stream) but it was otherwise pretty solid in terms of quality.

For Nodever's first hack, this is really well done. It has that classic "vanilla" feel that a lot of older hacks have, like stardust, for example. You can tell he started with crateria first and then moved on to brinstar, as his level design improved up to that point. Items are given at a nice rate, making the player never feel under-equipped. It's a decent size for a contest entry, and was rather fun to play through. The boss of the hack is quite amusing as well. I recommend at least one playthrough. I am eager to see what nodever does in the future.

A very short, non-linear hack. Item everywhere, lots of places to explore. Has quite a bit of palette changes, but other than those, it is very vanilla like. Good hack to play to kill some time and is very fun to run through again and again to try and get the best route and time when speedrunning.

This is a huge hack. My first playthrough went 9:16. New enemies, graphics, and items make this hack very unique. My only issue is the insane amount of damage certain enemies do early on and even later in the hack. There on no major physic changes, and item collection is fairly linear. There is the secret and devastating Phazon beam though.

The ripped graphics from SM All Stars was really nice and well done. There are plenty of secrets to find, as well as a new song used as a boss theme to go along with a custom boss.

Only things I disliked about the hack is how easy it is to get lost during a first playthrough. Also the map has some bugs, and the sun is a very hard thing to avoid. Nevertheless, still a fun hack, and the pyramid/desert theme is consistent throughout the entire hack.

The meme hack of ZM. Does is deserve it? Maybe.
There are tiling errors, bad door transitions, bad palettes, etc.
It is clear that Volonus was the creator's first hack. That's fine. What is not fine is that he took all parties criticisms as hating and after a certain point, stopped developing the hack. Who knows how the hack would have turned up if the criticism was received differently.

I was honestly torn whether to give this 3 or 4 orbs. My rating is more of a 3.5 if anything.

Anyhow, this is a decent hack. It simply recreates the environments from Super Metroid in the Zero Mission engine. Since a lot of features in SM don't exist here, he had to come up with some unique ways to implement the same mechanics. I must admit, his solutions were very clever. Several patches are used here, but he only used existing patches to make this happen and improvised elsewhere. I am pleased at how faithful this is despite the differences between the games.

Now for the negatives. Red Brinstar tileset is bad. Weird screw attack blocks in gauntlet and other spots. Kraid arm is in wrong spot. (This is more of my fault since my flipped kraid patch was broken anyway lol). Worst offender, Crocomire. I got insta-killed by the fatty because he teleported behind me and kept moving towards the wall. Lost lots of progress. Should not have included a boss that broken, whether it fits the hack or not.

Not a bad hack. Despite the DOOM theme, there isn't much DOOM to see in this hack. There's nothing super noteworthy about this hack, other than the special use of space jump. More could have been done to make the hack feel more cared for. (Title screen, ending scaling, text edits). But decent hack overall.

One of the better Chinese hacks out there.
First, let's talk about what the hack does right. It definitely has the most aesthetically pleasing level design out of the other Chinese hacks, and it not ridiculously challenging in an unfair way. There are a lot of interesting ideas used in the hack as well. One area in particular, used clipdata values as a puzzle element and was executed very well! One area of the hack features some interesting physics. He also managed to make item blocks (not using my patch, as he made this before that was released). They are slightly buggy, as they all show the missile expansion message, but they work. He also coded rising and lowering liquid into the game, a very neat touch. The hack also has nice custom music. However, I believe most, if not all, of the songs are just one large sound sample in order to preserve the sound quality. This makes the music sound good, but it doesn't loop well and cuts out very often from other competing sound effects. Lastly, the hack seems to be very nonlinear, which is definitely not an easy feat when hacking fusion, so good job. There aren't even any Navigation rooms!
However, there were so many odd and flat out bad design choices that made the hack unenjoyable. The intended path doesn't seem clear, and the requirements for how to get to the end game are not apparent at any point. Unlocking security locks is inconsistent, sometimes a boss unlocks them, sometimes a security room does, sometimes an item does. This made progression very annoying. I got softlocked in a couple spots. One was in Yakuza's room, because I entered the room backwards? He picked me up and dropped me in a solid wall. Second one I found a way out of bounds in a room because the ceiling was air. I don't remember if there were more. There are many cases of enemies hitting you the second you come out of the door. You can climb up walls that aren't real walls. Beam explosions were offset and would appear under the player. BOX respawned for some reason. List goes on. Lastly, the game lags like crazy through most of the hack. Especially after getting wave beam. Otherwise I didn't enjoy it too much. I still recommend a playthrough, as you can tell a lot of work was put into this and it does have a lot of neat concepts. Best part of the hack was the Nightmare fight.

Not as innovative as Metroid: Action, but I enjoyed it more actually. The hack lets you choose your items. What's neat is that certain "useless" items have use later or in spots you usually take for granted. However, it's not usually a tough choice between items. Beam upgrades are pretty much pointless to choose, as is varia, since Charlie forces varia anyway. Morphball and the lot aren't very useful except for some niche situations, and speedbooster only helps in the escape sections, which have have so much time to escape anyway, it doesn't matter. Fun hack though. Recommended.

Note: This review is based on the first contest patch. Later patches didn't change much that would effect the review, other than adding saves. Thank you for that.

Wow, I will say it was very clever to base the whole hack around the air conditioner event. That works surprisingly well for the non-linearity you were going for. The other concepts (such as the physics change based on area) was pretty neat. I am glad to see another hacker learning assembly and putting it to use! The hack was fun to play, and the story tied it all together! But as per the usual, there are some negatives. No saves. Why? This wouldn't be too big of an issue if your escape wasn't so trolly. You'd have players play the entire hack, only to die and have to redo literally everything. I really hate using save states, but I had to resort to using it because of the escape, and early on due to the difficulty. The difficulty itself isn't bad, but the no saves made it annoying. The hack got better once I got past the grind at the start, but ended on a sour note because of the silly things you pulled in the escape. All in all, a gnarly hack.

Time is based off my stream length. This is a pretty neat hack. The graphic design is very well done. General level design is pretty good as well. There isn't too much to say other than it was pretty rough in the beginning because I needed to explore better. I made pretty steady progress afterwards though. My biggest gripe is the final area. I flat out did not enjoy it. The gimmick with the zebitites was pretty neat, but the maze-like structure overstayed it's welcome to me. I spent way too long trying to figure out how to get the last zebitite in particular. However, I will say that can attributed to me being bad. My biggest problem with it however, is the stupid amount of rinkas and the unfixed drops. The rinkas would often spawn on top of me before I knew they were there, hit me in doors, and combo me for 2 to 3 etanks at a time in very particular spots. The lack of a refill system or fixed drops is also REALLY annoying. Running out of ammo is punished with having to go all the way back to a refill bug in order to farm properly. I feel as these two things made me almost dislike the hack. They certainly made me despise the final area. Otherwise, it's pretty solid. Good work.

I only finished this because I did a blind race of it with a few people. (Though not everyone was playing blind.) Playing it in such a setting makes large sections of the hack less memorable already, so my review may be a bit skewed as a result.

The hack has great atmosphere and gets darker as you progress. Progression feels very rewarding and is not too challenging by itself. There are very few enemy/boss encounters unlike typical metroid games. As a result, the few existing enemies are dangerous and force you to be cautious in order to survive. Exploring and surviving is key. The last area and certain flooded portions of the hack were very annoying though. (insta-kill enemies are almost always dumb). The enemy that OHKOs at the end is also one that actively targets the player's position. Despite this, it's a pretty neat hack. Definitely one of the most atmospheric hacks out there.

This hack was very interesting. Some hex tweaks and clever design allowed for new uses for bosses and allowed some basic enemies to be bosses. As expected, there are some troll and unfair spots in this hack. There are some very interesting route deviations I encountered, and plan to go back and explore them. If you like ZM and are relatively good at it, give this a try. Be prepared for some pain though.

If you've played an Ing-Ing hack before, you'll know what to expect. Meme item messages and names, obscure paths and item placement, punishing enemies, some lame and some good puzzles, and of course, CRUMBLE BLOCKS. THERE ARE SO MANY.

Early game is by far the worst part. You can go two different ways at the start. Going one way prevents you from going back until you grab a certain item. The non-linearity is something I like though, so good on you for that. There is a lot of softlock potential though. A multitude of ammo doors close behind the player where there isn't a steady potential of refill. Now it's unlikely a player will get softlocked there unless they intentionally do it but it still should be prevented. Also a softlock exists on the Kraid-Norfair area connection. If one speedboosts through that hallway they will hit speedblocks in the floor and clip inside the floor. Also it's a half-hack. Those are bad.

Later during the hack (once I had more than 1 e-tank) it turned from a grind to a breeze. Difficulty dropped pretty significantly. There are a lot of items I missed, so I will try to get those. It's a fun hack for sure. Just be prepared to suffer a bit in the beginning and get trolled in other places.

Had some neat concepts, but it was lag and bug infested. For what it was made for, (a contest) it's alright. The boss is neat, the little crystal hunts allow you to see all of the level design, and the HUD gimmick is real slick. If it wasn't for the bugs and lag, I would have enjoyed this much more.

1.0 Review

Have yet to play 1.1, so this review is based of 1.0. One of the first actual ZM hacks out there next to Deep Freeze. It contains a radical story, an awesome room state concept that fits the freezing/thawing theme of the contest it was submitted for, and tilesets from other games which give the game a new feel. Level design is okay and fits the challenge theme Ing-Ing was going for, however the design coupled with some enemy placements made for a frustrating time. 1.0 doesn't have an actual ending but I know 1.1 and any updates after that do. Enemies hurt and you have a small reserve of energy and ammo so use caution. The hack is a bit unfair in certain rooms but I believe most of these are fixed in 1.1 and the coming 1.2. An OK hack, especially for a first hack and the first ZM hack, but needs some work.

A decent hack for the winter contest. Throws a boss and high health/damage enemies at you early, but starting items and room state things make up for it. Not too interesting visually but it fits the freezing and thawing theme really well. Also ends kind of abruptly but that's not bad. A good quick play hack.

Big improvement to the first Redesign. Though the very few save stations and high damage dealing enemies makes savestates almost needed.

If I didn't rage so easily, I'd give this four stars. I enjoyed pretty much all of Mst's hacks. Guess I like silly hacks.

Nice short racing themed hack. Title set was nice and fits well. Not much skill is required unless you want to get to the "faster" routes. Racing wise I was a bit disappointed because those "faster routes" don't seem all that rewarding. Never the less, a good short hack for racing or speedrunning.

Despite the frustration and potential seizure causing rainbow bubble effect, this is a nice hack to kill a minute or two. No real skill is needed other than patience. Once the boss is defeated, you will enter a maze that really has no hint at all. Just keep going and you'll beat it.

This is one of the few hacks I had to stop playing.
I quit after searching for a couple hours for a way to progress, only to find it was though a not so obvious pathway.
It's honestly not a bad hack, but it is definitely very frustrating to play through. So much so that I was genuinely not having any fun. I don't think I will ever come around to finish it.

Basically a randomizer with his mockball patch. Some pretty cool speedbooster stuff to do here. However, once you get bombs, you don't need to do any more of that to finish the game. You do for 100% though. It's also pretty buggy. Sometimes you can keep speed when spring ball jumping, sometimes you don't. Bomb jumping is odd, spinjump speed is inconsistent, the list goes on.

While I enjoyed the hack for a while, I never came to complete it. The difficulty (even on the "standard" version, ramps up at an almost idiotic rate. While it does have great new enemies, graphics, physics, and is a remake of the first metroid game I've ever played, (Zero Mission obviously), the difficulty was just too much to bear.

This is a very large and good hack, but it came more of a frustration rather than an enjoyment due to high difficulty early on.

Very small one room hack. The room is very plain and the puzzles aren't very challenging. Not bad at all for a first hack, but there is little to no replay value. 2% is the max percentage. Again, not bad for a first. Just a bit too plain.

0% you ask? I cheated, that's why.
This is probably the worst hack I have ever played. Why? Well, there are insta-kill enemies hidden in the ground, some double as troll enemies, low energy count though the entire hack, hidden passages with no hints that are required to find to progress, tiling errors, inconstant clipdata, multiple instances of FORCED damage with already low health, and the worst offender of them all, the Charge Core-X fight. The X fly to a portion of the room that makes them borderline unfarmable, as they are intangible for a short period after spawning from the core. (Making them out of reach before they can be absorbed.) Now, had I got some extra missile tanks prior to the fight, this could have been avoided. Regardless, this is the room I cheated in. (gave myself health and ammo) Level design was not horrible, but there were many dumb things, mainly the hidden required paths. Also, there is a random Contra room that poses no significance as far as I could tell. In short, is this hack fun? No. Will someone have fun with it? Maybe, but definitely not me. Had I not been streaming this on my playthough, would have stopped playing.

Any hack author that completes a hack KNOWING that there are perma-stucks in it (and does nothing to fix it/is content with them) is one who clearly didn't try very hard to make it (Unless it's a contest hack).
