Move aside Eris, you just got replaced as my favorite hack ever made.

Hyper Metroid was such an overwhelmingly enjoyable ride. I didn't feel like I was being punished for playing the game, certain areas where hard early on, but that's my own fault for trying to sequence break! And this hack is insanely nonlinear, I didn't know where to go sometimes, but that's because there was always something new to explore!

Overall difficulty was very spot on. You get punched in the face if you try going in certain areas, but only enough to discourage you from going there, and not enough to actually keep you from going there! Not sure on item order, since I think I got several things out of order, I just couldn't help myself! Exploring was so enjoyable, and constantly rewarding. Some may say this hack is too easy, but I'd say its just right, the perfect balance. Project Base physics combined with several other additions, made this hack feel very fluid. The new ammo system is so good, that I almost want to steal it for myself! Move aside Redesign and Z-Factor, there's a new best escape sequence!

There are a few polish things that I'll want to discuss with RealRed that I feel should be in v1.1, but otherwise, I have no complaints.

2009 Edition:
This is my favorite hack ever made, it does everything right in my opinion. Here is my original review (edited by Zhs2) from Top Hacks 2009:

Ahh, Eris. The very definition of epic. With Eris, Digital Mantra created a diverse alien world, filled with unique color schemes, bountiful wild life, and riddled with ruins of a civilization long past. It's easy to get lost in the aesthetics of this world, but that is not all that this game brought to the table. Nay, this hack brought us back to the roots of what Metroid is really all about: exploration. From the very beginning, you are giving a large canvas to paint your progress on, with multiple paths to explore, but only one that takes you forward. This allowed you to get a grip of the landscape before you jumped headfirst into the adventures that awaited you. From that point on, you were sent on a roller coaster of possibilities. "Where do I go next?" "I haven't looked over there yet!" "I'm lost!" "This path wasn't opened to me before!" Exploration became a very large chunk of challenge for many that explored the depths of this world, but it certainly wasn't the only challenge that awaited them. The obstacles that faced you were much more formidable! Samus did little to resist these beings with her mere power beam, and she would need to rely on collecting more devastating gear to even hold a chance of survival. Getting injured was no laughing matter this time around, and players are forced to rely on more evasive maneuvers to explore further within the depths of the mighty Planet Eris. As you fought your way through this alien world, you learned the secrets of its lost generations, and became one with the powers of the Chozo warriors. Between the grand tapestries that were woven, the caverns to explore, and the challenges that awaited you in them, this hack had everything that a true Metroid fan could ever want or desire.

2012 edition:
DMan made several changes that I didn't like, and as such I will abstain from writing a review for that version at this time.

This is one of the few hacks I would rate as five stars. It's short, it's easy, and it's FUN. Nothing really compares to Oxide, with all its silliness and general goofiness, it's a must play in my opinion.

All I see in these reviews is MAD!

I for one thoroughly enjoyed SLT. It was completely new experience, that was constantly throwing me for a LOOP.

It had some features, that infuriated a lot of players, and I think I'm one of the very few that actually enjoyed it.

This was my first hack, and is what got me into Super Metroid hacking. It's an amazingly large overhaul of the game, and even today, we are only just now getting to the level of polish that was in this game. It expands the size of the game to three to four times the size of the original.

It's a fine game, and has some rewarding experiences, such as:
-large map to explore
-lots of polish in the hack make it look professional
-when you finally beat it, its a rewarding experience, with how hard it can be

A sample of things I didn't like:
-the physics are not very fun, gravity is too heavy
-enemies are too hard far too often, you never really feel like your OP until the end of the game
-spend a large amount of time to get an item, and it only adds 1 to your ammo total
-gauntlets of death that makes playing console condition next to impossible
-wasting time with pointless lost caverns section that isn't fun
-sand in maridia makes getting around really hard
-looking forever and a half for chozo guardians, since the hack is so large, and you get next to no clues
-tourian is hard as shit, and made me rage quit my first time playing

OVERALL, I feel the negative parts of the hack outshine the fun that you could have otherwise, which is a shame, considering how much work and how polished the game is.
