Best Aesthetics 2012
Winner: Project Base 0.8.1 by begrimed
Project Base is still not complete. Despite that, it is winning awards - and for good reason too. Generally speaking, the aesthetics changes to Project Base are largely impressive. Everyone already knows the original Super Metroid well enough, but Grime squeezes some graphical juice from somewhere, adds a slice of mustard Red Brinstar, a dash of bubbles, and gets an amazing result. Don't get me wrong, the aesthetics changes don't make the game feel different. But they do add a lot more visual interest to the game. The one thing you might worry about is taken care of at Mother Brain... Purple and greeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!

Grime has done an excellent job with this hack, rehashing Super Metroid to feel totally different yet spice up all of the existing gameplay.
In this remake, everything has just about changed in some way, no matter whether it's a very small alteration or a significant one. The environments and graphics are still very vanilla but are altered enough so that it is different and familiar. Areas also each have a darker tone and atmosphere, making the hack more immersive and representative of the despair to be had in the halls of Zebes. Extra moves are also included for extra fun! Who knows what is in store for the next version?
