Winner: Super Metroid: Z-Factor by Metaquarius
Z-Factor offers the player a stunning combination of challenge, exploration, and discovery. Z-Factor came out of nowhere to surprise us players with a huge new world, impressive ASM edits, and lots of Zaridia. Z-Factor has it all. Right from the beginning, you get a glimpse of just how much effort went into this hack. Little water droplets and glowing eyes meet you almost immediately in your journey, and just as quickly they are gone. Z-Factor has a ton of one-off things like that. They happen for a short time, or just once, and then they are gone, never to be seen again. But really, while those are impressive little bits, it is the hack itself that really took it to another level.

Z-Factor is an exploration based hack. The map is huge, and offers a complex system of twists, turns, secret tunnels, seemingly pointless gates, and some interesting puzzles. The exploration is everywhere, and while often times you come across another Missile Tank, every now and then you discover one of the rarer items and you get more motivated to look around and see what else you can dig up. The puzzles around the exploration are often extremely well done. And topping everything off is the most amazing Tourian you have ever come across. The hack definitely deserved Top Hack of 2012, as nothing really came close to accomplishing what Z-Factor does.

Super Metroid Z-Factor is one of those hacks that only comes every several years, gracing us with design styles akin to the original with some crazy surprises. There's that immediate grip you feel when the intent to explore and master is inherently in your gamer's blood. While it was a bit crytic as to where to go at first, once you found your way there was a wealth of exploration to thoroughly enjoy. Metaquarius came out of nowhere presenting a full hack of epic proportions without a single inkling as to it's two year development. Well thought puzzles, amazing level design, surprising ASM, and moments of sheer awe. This is the Super Metroid Redesign of 2012. One of the finest hacks to grace the roster albeit true to the original style format. Most highly recommended, and most definitely the best hack of 2012.
