Description
METROID: CROCOMIRE’s LAST STAND is Roebloz’s second Metroid: Zero Mission hack, this time starring the X parasite mimic SA-X in an alternate timeline where Samus encountered an X instead of The Baby at the end of Metroid II: Return of Samus, taking down the last of the Space Pirates for complete galactic domination of the X!

The hack redesigns the whole map and has quite a few new tilesets, (Mostly from Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion) granting a brand-new experience that feels quite close to Super Metroid. The goal is to terminate Crocomire in the Dissolvery, which is locked behind 4 Security Locks, (Similar to Fusion) however one unique thing that this ROM hack does it that you have a great choice of which order you want to do things in. You could get Space Jump before even touching the Varia Suit, get the Plasma Beam as your second beam upgrade, everything is possible if you’re clever enough.

The major items also move around during a “CORE-X” playthrough, (This game’s equivalent to Hard Mode) granting even greater replay value, especially to get those nice ending pictures. And yes indeed, the player sprites have been changed to those of the SA-X from Fusion, making the hack the second one to ever have custom Samus graphics in Zero Mission. The length of the hack is pretty short, (Around 2 hours) but going through all the endings and exploring the different paths of every difficulty could more than quadruple that. A full map is included with the download, with two different styles (And two different ones to reflect the changes in Hard Mode)

There are also other various ASM tweaks thanks to the talented ASM hackers of Metroid Construction, such as the Crocomire final boss being very close to Super Metroid’s, and the Fusion beams being ported back into Zero Mission.

So if you are looking for a refreshing Zero Mission hack with a Super Metroid vibe, this hack is for you!

First of all, i gotta give to this hack the fact that is the only metroid media (fanmade or official) as for now that let you conceptually play as SA-X (there is multitroid but we don't count this one that much). Seeing SA-X fully payable in the screenshots already induced me to download it, really.

Let's start with Sam... AHEM, SA-X's poses. They're weird, so weird. Don't get me wrong, pixel art and spritework is indeed time-consuming and hard to do, but jesus christ man, the beam shoots doens't even match SA-X arm cannon position! Also, be sure to hold your laughter once you get power grip, really, not only SA-X has no heart she also has no skeleton as well LMFAO.

Another criticism i have is the overabuse of SM assets, this hack honestly should be called: ''super metroid GBA (engine) edition''. Literally everything you know from original ZM is erased by it's predecessor: SFX, music, graphics, etc... with a few areas here and there with fusion graphics, for example.

I tried to complete the hack, but got permastuck at Mar... Ahem, aqua abyss because i didn't got gravity suit. And honestly, my impressions on this hack weren't that high at this point, so i quitted.

The reasons i give 3 orbs is that, first: SA-X, second: even though the level design is quite bland and forgettable, the game at least is 99% fairly deisgned, with few permastucks/softlocks and quite completable, just make sure you collect gravity suit the earliest possible so you can complete the game! ;)

Didn't finish

Phenomenal hack. This will go down in history as one of the first hacks to feature custom samus graphics. It's like an amalgamation of super, fusion and zm distilled into one game and in a good way. Only gripes I have are fairly minor. some stucks. Some graphical problems like Samus and her weapons not being lined up with these new sprites. There's no fantastical setpieces, but the level design is 99.99999% competent and it just feels fun to play. I wouldn't consider croco's last stand a masterpiece, but it's definitely an instant classic in my opinion. Just don't go to the aqua area through the power bomb entrance and you'll be okay.

Finished.

Way more fun than Operation Execution. However, I'm pressed to give it three orbs because of quite a few failings, lots of them audial and visual and thus superficial if you are sufficiently desensitized to all of the ripping that makes up hacks these days, you know, just some music stolen from Super Metroid that sounds bad thanks to compression or a sprite set for Samus that seems totally unfinished on the assembly side (or perhaps the artist gave up once they realized the SA-X doesn't fit ZM poses - the power grip is hilarious.) The biggest failing by far is that it promises the ability to go anywhere and collect anything if you're clever enough but you can and will be trapped in the eastern section of Aqua Abyss because you never found the Gravity Suit. Hmm. Still, the gameplay is good, the levels are fun, and it has Roebloz-tier enemy count per room (high) but you never feel frustrated with killing anything. This hack is definitely on the easy side, great for casual exploration - just watch out for the Aqua Abyss trap entrance made of power bomb blocks. Oh, and watch the title screen demos, too. They are by far the funniest part of the entire hack.

Very good hack and its not as short as it looks like, the game uses special dialogue in some rooms, there are good secrets but they are marked on the map too, sa-x looks strange for doing samus's poses but looks accurate, the final boss is easy but the dissolvery its not.

Tips:

Fight the choso defense system with the charged beam and if it does not do damage then seek upgrades.

You may have to tank the damage in the spikes room.

You get gravity suit after killing ridley.

The 4th security lock is in aqua abyss.

for the most part, it's a good hack of Zero Mission that uses tilesets from that of Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion and the tilesets were pretty nice and well done. and they weren't glitchy like I'd have expected considering how the SA-X/Samus sprite looks once you get Power Grip and how it looks when you're firing beam shots.. speaking of the SA-X sprite, that right there is why I can't give this hack a full 5 orbs. because for one, the beam shots don't even line up with the arm cannon in the hack and for two, using Power Grip was unsatisfying and displeasing, at least in an aesthetic sense. the GFX for the SA-X sprite are really my only complaint but I understand cause Fusion and Zero Mission are two different games with two differently designed sprites so of course there will be minor issues. I understand also because I know this must've been a difficult hack to make, and to make look polished and well done on top of that. I was going for a sub 3h run but I got lost and stuck in one area until I figured it what I did wrong and after that, I was able to progress because at the time I got stuck, I had thought this hack was unfinishable and incomplete and unplayable. but for what it's worth, this was an amazing hack imo minus the sprites but we can disregard that tho. for anyone that wants to know what this hack is like, all I can say is make sure you explore every bit of every area in this hack or you'll be left lost and confused like I was. I think exploration is a very big part of this hack so you have to be 100% sure to check everywhere because some pathways and tunnels are hidden well so unless you have keen eyesight or you're good at finding secret pathways or you just wander around and shoot aimlessly, some of the secret pathways will be difficult to find, even after acquiring Wave Beam. this hack is a 8 out of 10 at best for me and it's pretty well done for the most part so yeah I think I'd recommend it even tho some of the bosses are a bit tricky but for the most part, they shouldn't pose any real threat
