Best Aesthetics 2017
Award
Winner: Metroid - Rogue Dawn by Grimlock, Optomon, snarfblam
It's hard to understate just how fantastic the world of Rogue Dawn is. Grimlock's world design rivals that of any "retro-inspired" game, yet still functions within the limitations of the NES itself. That alone would be enough to win this category for me, but even ignoring how technically impressive a feat it is, Rogue Dawn is absolutely gorgeous, and it is the only time I can remember ever stopping and soaking in the atmosphere of an NES game.

Grimlock does a lot more with 8-bits than is often done with 16.

While I never finished the hack, the graphics are an absolute masterclass for NEStroid.

Rogue Dawn looks good enough that you almost forget you're playing nestroid.

Nestroid looks really nice with slopes

Rogue Dawn still impresses me today. Everything about this hack feels too good to be true for a NEStroid hack, and no doubt part of that is the visuals and music, both of which are stellar. The artstyle that this hack goes for is very distinct and works incredibly well with the limitations of the NES - crazy worlds with weird colors, heavy use of the black backdrop which suits the tilesets extremely well, and don't even get me started on the slopes! If you count music as part of the aesthetic, it is also amazing and some of these songs still pop into my head!
