Description
Metroid 2, now with a map!

Explore SR388 with a detailed map that keeps track of your position, items collected, acid levels (which lowers in real time) and metroids killed. Getting lost is a thing of the past!

Of course, being an uncharted planet, Samus won't have the map right from the beginning, but fear not! Obtaining the map is as simple as using a save point to unlock the current area map. Now you have no excuse for not being able to complete your mission to eradicate all metroids...

The map is an invaluable aid, but it won’t spoil the mission! Metroid locations only appear once you’ve encountered or defeated them, so you’ll still need to navigate the maze-like tunnels of SR388 on your own...

Map controls:
Dpad: Scroll map
A: Samus Screen
B: Toggle animated BG grid on/off
Select: Toggle Light Mode on/off
Start: Exit Map Screen

The map isn't the only new addition either. Some QoL improvements and bug fixes have been made to the game too!

New Features:
- Map.
- A proper file select screen has been added that displays all of Samus's data.
- When starting a new game, you can name your file with up to 5 characters.
- Although the map cannot be brought up during the final boss fight, basic pausing is at least allowed.
-Samus Screen for toggling abilities/beams

Bugfixes/Improvements:
- A bug in the Area 3 song data has been fixed, making the wave channel play/loop properly.
- The Area 6 theme that plays after a metroid is killed plays at the correct tempo.
- The second metroid nest theme in the final area plays if you leave and come back, instead of being a one-time thing.
- Killing a metroid larva makes the final boss roar and shake the screen briefly (Final boss also shakes the screen in the hallway before its room).
- Toggling missiles doesn't make the final boss flicker. The final boss and HUD are also drawn properly while exiting the room.

After trying to play Metroid 2 on numerous occasions, this hack finally got me to play to the end! No more swapping between two screens to look at a map that gives away too much information. Now it’s all one smooth expirence! There is some minor dsync issues, notably in area 3 and 8, however 3 was fixed by going though a numbered transition and 8 was so late in the game I didn’t pay much attention. If I had to voice one criticism, I wish the items weren’t marked on the map until after you got them or were near by them, as it’s pretty easy to get 100% completion. If you haven’t played Metroid 2 yet, this is the hack to play with even as your first time. Simply fantastic!

WHAT? LOO-E CAN FINISH A HACK?

I do implore people to give Metroid II a chance on its own with the true "make your own map" experience. If you really can't stomach that, however, or you've already tried it and didn't like it, then using this hack as an avenue to experience Metroid II is more than worthwhile! I ultimately think that making a compromise to enjoy an experience is more valuable than never being able to enjoy it because it does something that bothers you, so for that reason I am very happy with this hack's existence, as it makes the game more accessible to a wider audience.

Plus, it's a very impressive technical achievement, and that on its own is worth five orbs!

Very good job; 100% approved. Please play this. Even if you've already played Metroid II, I think this is worth experiencing it from a different perspective.

Overall I was extremely impressed by what LOO-E has managed to pull off here. This definitely makes Metroid 2 a far more enjoyable experience.

The map is quite polished. The Samus equipment screen was heavily utilized in my playthrough (particularly toggling the beams, similar to Moehr's Distress Call.)

This is actually my first time 100%-ing Metroid 2.

Wanted to say a quick word on what emulators work ok and what don't. I was warned to steer clear of Gambatte due to desyncing issues. Mesen is recommended. Not FX Pak Pro compatible, yet.

I played this on mGBA on Wii for most of the campaign. The only real issue with that emulator is the map header scrolls away on taller maps. I would not have even perceived that as a bug until I was told it stays locked when playing in Mesen. Either way, my experience on mGBA was perfectly fine otherwise.

The map actually looks really good in the DMG palette.

Beam swapping is cool and the map is very impressive. Good excuse to replay Metroid 2. It'd be interesting to one day combine multiple QoL changes like this to M2 as an alternative way of experiencing the game.

Occasionally the marker designating the player's position would go off the map and could be returned to its proper place unless I left the area. That could easily be a limitation of M2 or something to be fixed though.

(Played on Game Boy Player)

Before I say anything else, let me get myself straight. This is honestly something EVERYONE who is ether playing this game for the first time, or replaying it out of boredom should patch with their game. It is a total game changer implementing the map system similar to the GBAtroids which provide a more direct approach to where items are and if you've obtained them or not.

Other then that, the scanline effect that opens up to the map system is really creative and pushes some boundaries being a fairly simple Game Boy game. It even has some weird settings including a "high contrast" mode for whatnot. On top of this hack, the beam swapping is really useful and prevents me from going back to get the Ice Beam for the final boss. In general, everything about this hack is perfect and there honestly shouldn't be a reason *not* to patch this to your game (unless you want the grainy original 1991 experience...)

also loo-e for the love of god please finish m2nes thank you

Been playing the game in a single stroke, and gotta say, the improvements made on top of the map are absolutely fanstastic, it makes the game as perfect as it can be without changing its essence.

Though I do have a few small suggestions;
- Making the Energy Tank collection fanfare the same lenght and music as collecting Missile Expansions
- Making the 4 actually look distinct from the 9
- Filling up the missing pixels in the Varia Suit

Pretty small stuff, but I think these would make a world of difference when combined with everything else.

I created an account just for this.
Thank you, LOO-E!

After over 10 years of struggling to beat Metroid II, I've finally done it, thanks to this map hack. Sure, I could have used a guide, but I'm a bit stubborn and didn't want to...
No more getting lost in a room that's a carbon copy of a previous room that was a carbon copy of another previous room!

The way the map is implemented is pretty cool, since we unveil parts of it as we discover save stations. And as Justaicon mentioned, the scanlines effect when there's no map data available is really well done.

The hack really turned what was a confusing and occasionally frustrating experience (to me) into a breeze.

I think it was a bit overgenerous with information at times, with the map showing exactly where items can be picked up, where recharge stations are, etc, but overall I can't complain. And despite that, I still missed 3 items, so...

I've encountered a couple of "bugs" where the map showed me out of bounds, but it really didn't detract from the experience.
(It happened on my way out of Area 1 and when I reached Area 10's pit.)

This is the definitive way to play Metroid II, IMO.
Thanks again, LOO-E!
