Description
“Metroid: Engage Ridley” is a quick play hack designed for a new bite-sized experience for Metroid Zero Mission. This hack takes place shortly after the events of Metroid II, where Samus pursues Ridley after his unexpected visit on her way out of SR-388. Following Ridley’s defeat, he retreats back to his tiny hideout over in one of Planet Zebes moons to prepare to serve in Zebes following its reconstruction. He must buy some time out in before the Space Pirates and Mother Brain are ready to take on Samus at Planet Zebes. Samus follows Ridley to his hideout, ready to take on her new bounty!

This hack features…

- Revamped single-map overworld
- Custom graphics
- Revamped Credits
- 6 Energy tanks, 26 Missile Tanks, 6 Super Missile/Power Bomb tanks to collect!
- Scaled item %
- Custom end-screens
- and so much more!

v1.0 – Initial Release

v1.1 – Fixes a couple of issues, as well as…

- Fixed misspelled names in credits
- Patched a softlock in one of the areas involving a really long shinespark
- Made harder to find items more less hidden as a quality of life measure
- Adjusted level design to introduce hidden sequence breaking (You do not need to know how to infinite bomb jump or wall jump to find these)
- Removes the Charlie mural scene part of the credits (thanks jiffy!)
- Implemented 20 => 26 Missile tanks for a total of 130 Missiles, item percent scaling has been redone to balance the changes.

A charming little hack. It definitely scratches the brain in just the right way in the early sections where you very quickly match up the abilities you get to obstacles you want to traverse. The item text is also really charming in my opinion. The references may be a bit too gratuitous, but those references did make me smile. I assume most people who play Metroid hacks are seasoned enough on video games to appreciate it. It is a fun and tightly paced experience which definitely has me in favor of seeing more smaller hacks.

Just a nice serving of meat and potatoes. It's not ambitious or out-there in terms of scope or design. It's just a well-executed little thing that shows a good grasp of genre fundamentals, and it's pleasant to look at and play. Very promising for a freshman effort.

Recommended.

It is quite fitting that this would be the first hack my wife would watch me play because it is a miniaturized version of metroid zero mission and thus an excellent entry point for metroid rom hacks. The hack doesn't do anything new but it works with very few issues. The only issues were the ridley battle being cheezable, a single breakable block that was speed boost instead of missile, making it impossible to get the energy tank that is nearby. and a few ability gates that never became reachable. Still, the level design is incredible and this was a great breath of fresh air after playing the piece of crap that was Death's Door.

Definitely a laudible first effort, but it can't compete with some other hacks

+Some cute ideas, I very much liked many of the speed booster puzzles
+New graphics is always appreciated
+Looks like skipping certain items is an option (e.g. easy/skipping Kraid by getting early supers)
+With exception of regular bomb blocks, the modified block styles (speed booster especially) look very cool
+Good ending screens

-Rather simplistic hack, not very technical in most parts (might a plus to some)
-Graphics seem to be saturated improperly and backgrounds are rather bland (it makes a big difference)
-Not a fan of how certain items are hidden: often behind a missile block that has zero indication (though it seems to follow a pattern); inside a hidden wall that has zero indication; that final super missile was hidden unconventionally (spoiler read backwards: !reliops!.ddiiccaa.eht.ni.roolf) and took me a lot of time to discover, I'm 50/50 on it, it was annoying to find, but it's also cool to see new ideas. I wish that block would have been colored differently or otherwise more eye-catching
-Escape sequence is anticlimactic to say the least

Bugs/features
-Glitching through the floor: At the very east of the map, there is a room with a morph ball shine sparking device. In that room it's possible to fall through the floor by jumping at around the door area. Waiting long enough will return Samus to the game, but it's clear that there is an error there
-Softlock: After using said device, Samus finds herself in an area where she can shinespark back to the ship. By shinesparking diagonally, it's possible to get to the next screen where there is no way to either progress or walk back, since changing the screen makes the shinespark blocks from the previous room reappear. As far as I can tell, there is no way to escape that area
-Charge beam worm can be cheesed by crouching at the lowest point where it can't even reach
-Ridley cheese in the acid

Not a hack that I would go out of my way to recommend. It's not bad, but it's not great either

Short and decent RTZ. Cramming Super Metroid tiles into Zero Mission will never not be funny to me but hey, if it floats your boat I won't complain. No real problems with this one that I can remember either so it must be pretty good.

I like the hack in general, but unless my ROM is busted, there's a serious issue where its impossible to get to the Plasma and Power Bomb area in Notfair because the ledge is too high to jump up to. I think High Jump might just be broken underwater, and it isn't like IBJ will work. This is a serious issue and I hope it is fixed soon.
