This mod REALLY needs to be discussed. TL;DR: Normal version is fun, 5/5 and Insane is 3/5, making me average this hack to 4/5. Insane there's much more softlock/hardlock potential. AFAIK you NEED Speed to beat Insane.

Early-on, you better know how to crawl (unless save scum).

I played the normal version a while ago, before it wasn't on this site. I really enjoyed it. The creator most maps adequate to you probably not having suits or certain beams, and probably having grapple. On average, you should have enough ammo, e-tanks and grapple to beat the game. And you should get spooked by some majors. AFAIK there's no way to guarantee Majors on Normal, and Hard mode it's just normal with lower SR rates (avoid that one imo).

I like that there was a lot of new puzzles and tricks to get items. Also one new routing path. You can get more items via tricks, exploring through rooms, executing hard tricks, some advanced tricks and some TAS-tier stuff.

In both Normal and Insane versions exploration is very rewarding, since any new upgrades you get you might open some routings and opportunity to get more items.

For both versions, there's instances you might get spooked by Super Ultimate enemies. They are different-colored versions of some enemies, and really nasty. They might deal a lot of damage or straight up put you at 1 HP. One of them also makes Gravity a double-edge sword, since they are immobile normally, and move to you if you're using Gravity. In Insane mode, you get ambushed by them more frequently.

Insane mode has some new, interesting, nice and DUMB stuff. The pity system is great (when I played Normal, there was no pity), and if it wasn't for the escape, I'd say there was no need to save-scum for items. 20 Morphs give Boost Ball, and that opens a LOT of stuff in the game. 10 gives Gravity. Suits in Insane can break, so you better be really careful if/when you get then. And try to explore as much of Maridia/Norfair when you grab one.

The world is very well-connected via the room bottom of the ship. It got a teleport to all major areas of the game. 1 room is very easy to find and it's covered on the forum (150 missile/30 supers door). Teleport in Brinstar you need at least 6 supers, in WS Boost Ball, Blue Suit or some way to break a couple of speed blooks, and the teleport is not that great, since it's the closest to the ship imo. Maridia one you need to take some damage or 1 PB and a bunch of Supers, and the one in Lower Norfair you need Wave + Ice and move FAST. I don't know if it's RTA possible to get to that teleporter without Wave + Ice. Even reaching that room alive would be a feat.

In addition to the Super Ultimate enemies, big Metroids got buffed. They PERMANENTLY decrease your HP. This is why saving and getting E-Tanks at the right time is so important. You really need to be wary of those guys. They are usually near the map stations that give you one SR guarantee ticket. You better pray (or save scum) for Ice and a bunch of power bombs. You might not need Ice if you're great at the game, but they will jumpscare you. They will jumpscare you at least once outside the map stations. And Tourian is filled with them.

I'd say Insane would be RTA doable if you're the type of player that can beat Cliffhanger OG, since it has (mostly) the same gimmick of no savestations outside ship. I played it using savestates in some places where you would be allowed to save. It was hell on earth. Lost count how many times I died. I didn't savescum, but of course I got different items sometimes, because I died trying to leave some rooms/on my way to save. It's sadistic enough to that YOU CAN'T HEAL via drops.

Leaving power-ups around is vital if you think you might get damaged a lot, so you got a healing source. Also abuse the healing stations; they're a Godsent early-on.

In my playthrough, I lucked out a lot. I got High Jump as my first major, got Bombs after the first Metroid encounter, and ended up collecting all beams. Got Wave were Plasma is in OG (fuck that room. Also there's a nice surprise for you leaving that room, too). My second SR guarantee was Varia, but I didn't have Wave nor Speed, so I couldn't explore a bunch of Norfair, mostly areas that you pass by Croc. I reached Boost Ball pity and Gravity pity a bit before and a bit after Draygon.

It would be "fine" if Insane was just super hard. I'd have to rely a bit on luck, and make sure you use your suits the most that you can. Main obstacle could be Ridley, since, different than Normal mode, you can't realistically stack 10+ e-tanks and heal, or farm right before you fight it (remember? drops don't heal).

But on the escape, I am pretty sure you need Speed to enter the ship. Just Boost Ball is not enough. I don't think Boost Ball + Spring Ball work. The other routes to the ship are sealed since you don't have ammo after MB + there's supers and pb blocks.

The creator leaves 10 items starting Tourian, and even breaking my save-scum rule and farming those items I never got speed (if I put a time on my Rating, it means I was crazy enough to reset for Speed and actually finish a run). That's why I don't think anyone can reliably beat this hack without savestates/save scumming. You either need to be a lucksacker or enjoy resetting for that 0.38% chance of getting Speed Booster.

I recommend Normal version. If you can beat Redesign and Cliffhanger, I recommend Insane, but be prepared to reset a lot and scum for speed booster at some point.
